How to Make Your Phone Battery Last Longer

One of the biggest pet peeves of smartphone users across the globe is how the battery depletes over time. Any battery manufacturer will tell you that all batteries lose their capacity via excessive usage; however, this doesn’t make it any less frustrating when your device simply doesn’t hold charge like it used to. Therefore, smartphone users across the globe are looking for ways to protect their battery’s lifespan. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to completely stop the depletion of your battery life, as lithium-ion batteries lose how much charge they can hold with each charge and discharge.

Manage Your Location Services

You can start by managing your location services as, without adjusting the settings, your phone will consistently be scanning via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Of course, to function in this way, your battery life will be being used; therefore, you should ensure that apps can only access the location services when the app is being used. You can do this by going into your phone’s settings and disabling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi scanning so that apps can’t use location services in the background.

Switch off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi When They’re Not in Use

In addition to adjusting your location services, you should also switch off your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when they’re not in use. This will help your battery last longer on a single charge, and the fewer charge cycles your phone is subjected to, the better. When your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are switched on, they’ll constantly scan for networks to connect with, which will inevitably drain your battery. Leaving your Wi-Fi on won’t drain your battery as much as your Bluetooth, but if you’re not likely to use it for the whole day, you may as well turn it off.

Charge Slowly

There’s no denying that fast charging is a real convenient time-saver; however, it’s not necessarily the best course of action for your battery health. This is because fast charging can stress your battery out and cause it damage. Therefore, if you want to save your battery’s lifespan, it might be a better idea to save the fast charging for urgent circumstances. Since charging your battery slowly is better for it, you might occasionally charge your phone via your laptop, as this will allow your phone to charge at a reduced rate.

Avoid Charging Your Battery Beyond 100%

There is such a thing as overcharging your phone, and this too kills your battery over time. This is because, once your phone reaches 100%, your battery undergoes stress from the higher voltage and heat builds up over time. Of course, your phone won’t overheat to the point that the user is in danger, this elevated heat is the quickest way to destroy a battery’s lifespan. If you can’t avoid charging your phone overnight, make sure you do so in a well-ventilated, cool place. This way, the heat will dissipate rather than building up in your device and causing damage.

Prevent Your Battery from Going to 0% or 100%

You’d be forgiven for thinking that allowing your battery to completely drain and then charging it until it’s full is the best way to care for your battery but, in fact, the opposite is true. Since smartphones contain lithium batteries, these are placed under the most strain when they are fully drained or fully charged. As a result, charging your battery to 100% rather than 60% can half its lifespan. In an ideal world, you would charge your battery to 80% and not let it drop below 30%. Good charging practice is essential to your battery’s health.
