Should Marketers Buy Desktops or Laptops?

The popularity of digital marketing means that marketers will be spending more of their working lives than ever on their computers. It is therefore crucial that you find the best machine for the job. One of the first questions anybody looking to get a computer should ask is whether they should buy a desktop or a laptop.

How Much Do You Value Portability?

The first question that determines whether you should buy a desktop or laptop has to be: how much do you plan on traveling with your computer? If you do minimal travel and already own a phone or a tablet that you can work on when needed to do minimal tasks like sending emails, then you probably do not need a laptop. However, if you often travel and enjoy the option to work remotely, then a laptop is probably right for you. Modern laptops are incredibly slim and sleek, with some models weighing less than three pounds and only half an inch thick. The advent of cloud storage also means you can access the information you need remotely and won’t need a large computer with lots of space.

Affordability 

Those marketers who are always thinking about the budget may be drawn to laptops as they are often cheaper, but desktop computers can give you better value if you compare the computers’ specs. Whatever your budget is, if you choose between a desktop and a laptop for the same budget, you will find that the desktop computer will have better specs, giving you more CPU, more RAM, and probably a higher GPU. This extra injection of power will mean you can do far more multitasking than a laptop that will start to whirr its fans and lag before a desktop starts to struggle.

However, in terms of affordability, you need to consider that a desktop computer’s cost does not normally factor in accessories (keyboards, a mouse, a monitor, etc.). This could put a substantial increase on your budget. A laptop comes with those accessories built-in, so when comparing specs, make sure you include accessories too.

Power 

As previously mentioned, pound for pound, desktops give you more power for your money. They will have more RAM and a better CPU simply because space is not a big deal – desktop systems do not face the same pressure to cram in components, including heavier and less mobile components that do a better job. For that reason, desktop computers are a good choice if you make animations, videos, music, and use apps that require a lot of processing.

For marketers, this is quite useful, but many front-end marketers simply do not process videos, instead just handling the strategy and implementing the strategy. If you are a marketer that goes to many meetings with clients and co-workers, a laptop might be the better option, providing you don’t have a mammoth marketing technology stack. If you are a back-end marketer that produces all the digital assets, you probably know that a desktop computer will be the better option for you.
