Essential Maintenance Needed in the Office

As a business owner, you will have a long list of things to think about throughout the day. From overseeing projects, liaising with clients and employees, marketing strategies, and looking over the business finances, it is easy to push other things to the back of your mind. One issue that you might not think about every day is office maintenance, but it is important to make sure that these important jobs are done to keep yourself and your employees safe. While your building’s property manager might be responsible for organizing some of these jobs, it’s still good to be aware of these as you might need to take care of some issues yourself.

Elevator Maintenance

Elevators are used every day without a second thought, but it would be a nightmare to get stuck in one or face some other scary incident due to a lack of maintenance. This is why you must have your elevators surveyed and tested regularly by experts such as ATIS, who can help with conveyance inspection and management.

Emergency Alarms

All of your teams should have an allocated fire marshal and first aider when it comes to emergencies, but as these situations are (hopefully!) rare, it’s important to practice these procedures. This is also a great opportunity to test the emergency alarms in your office to make sure that they are working properly. You should aim to do this every three to six months.

Plumbing

Your staff and any visitors to your office might have access to your toilets, and if there are issues with the plumbing, this could be a disaster. If you do notice any issues, do not ignore them. Call a plumber to inspect the problem as soon as possible or contact your property manager to request that they do this. If your building’s plumbing is delicate, make sure there are signs put up in bathrooms requesting people don’t flush certain items down the toilet if it is going to cause problems.

Electrics

It’s important to get all electrical outlets and appliances tested regularly in an office, as this can help to prevent fires and accidents when people are using them. Bad electrics can also cut out the power to the whole office, or even the entire building, in some circumstances. You should have these tested at least once a year to keep up with this essential maintenance work.

Desks, Chairs, and Other Equipment

Finally, make sure that all of your office desks and chairs are safe to use, as if they become unstable, it can lead to nasty accidents. If desks or chairs feel loose or wobbly, check that the screws are in place properly. It might be a case where old furniture and other equipment used in the office simply needs replacing due to age.

It’s vital to make sure your employees and any visitors you have in your office are safe, and part of creating a safe environment is keeping up with essential maintenance work. Use this quick checklist to remind yourself of these jobs, and either organize them yourself or contact your property manager to let them know work needs to be done.
